CHARTING A NEW COURSE
In August 2019, 23 exceptional young men joined the community of Route 79, The Duchenne Scholarship Program, established by Sarepta Therapeutics to help students diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) pursue post-high school education.
Named for the 79 exons in the dystrophin gene impacted by DMD, the program acknowledges that each person living with Duchenne travels a distinct and often uncertain route through life. And like all of us, they have important and unique dreams and goals.
Sarepta celebrates these students' passion and persistence, their determination to pursue new achievements, friendships, independence, and more. We're privileged to play a small role in helping them chart their future course.
INSPIRED AND STRENGTHENED BY COMMUNITIES
The 2019 applicants were asked to submit essays on the theme of community. They wrote of finding strength and support in the schools and towns that rally around them. The sports team that adapt to their needs. The clubs and shared interests that fuel their imaginations.
A DIVERSITY OF INTERESTS AND ACHIEVEMENTS
The breadth and depth of focus across the Route 79 recipients is impressive. They're pursuing associates, bachelors, and masters degrees. Their areas of study reflect any typical pool of American students: humanities subjects like classics and political science; technology fields like computer science and mechanical engineering; and others such as journalism, business, hospitality management, and more.
Some recipients already have very specific career goals—like becoming a cruise ship director or sports announcer. Many others express their excitement to dive into a subject and see where it leads. Beyond school, these young men play musical instruments, adaptive sports, and video games, write blogs, run YouTube channels, and inspire charities, just to name a few.
Above all, they share an enthusiasm for life today and whatever tomorrow may bring.
The scholarship program is administered by International Scholarship and Tuition Services (ISTS), Inc., a firm that specializes in managing sponsored scholarship programs. This ensures complete impartiality in selection of recipients and to maintain a high level of professionalism.
